The Basset Puppies

Two weeks or so ago we visited my brother in law's farm in Maryland. If you are a reader of my blog, you may remember that I told you I had a story about the basset hound puppies. Here they are Marley and Stitch!

As the story goes, it was a cold wintery night with sub 0 degree winds blowing through the trees. Tom, the kind hearted guy that he is, decided to bring in the two little basset puppies into the kitchen of the house, so they wouldn't be so cold out in their pen. (They do have a good size dog house with lots of straw, and they really aren't that little at one year old.) He penned them into the kitchen so they wouldn't pee on the floors in the rest of the house... just in case that were to occur. Then Tom went upstairs to bed. Some time later, he heard barking in the kitchen. "I am not going down to see what it is!" he protested, and tried to go back to sleep. Finally after not being able to sleep he stumbled downstairs to find flames rising high out of the burners on the gas stove in the kitchen and the dogs barking frantically at them! The puppies had stood up against the stove and pushed the knobs into an on position and a paper bad someone had left on the stove was blazing away!~ Tom put out the fire and went back to bed after strongly scalding the puppies.

A few days later, Tom again put the puppies in the kitchen because of the low temperatures out side again. He made sure there were no bags or paper anywhere near the stove this time, and he went to bed. Once again he was awakened by barking puppies in the middle of the night! He again stumbled down the steps again and this time there were no flames shooting up in the kitchen, but there was the strong smell of gas! It was the puppies again! They had turned on the stove knobs again! So this time he took the knobs off of the stove and now they are on the windowsill right next to the stove!
The puppies do not come in unless the weather is very severe, and they haven't learned to open the refrigerator ..... yet!

This is Holly~ the mama of the delinquent puppies!

These are the other dogs in our lives. These pictures were taken just a few days ago on our front porch.

(Starting at the left) Katie, Yuka, Mercedes (the old lady of the three.)

Yuka (our grand puppy) was a bit dirty here- she had been swimming in the lake
and had waded through the mud!

And Katie..... she is the baby of the group at 2 years old, and always
tries to have the last word!
