A year ago yesterday our dear friend Sondra Ball passed away.
She and her husband Mario were our oldest friends, of 30 years. She was a lot of things for many people. I miss her a lot. Recently I thought about calling her to discuss some homeschooling issues I knew she had dealt with. But then I remembered.... I will have to wait till I see her up above.
Here is one of her many poems.
Over the Fields
by Sondra Ball
Over the fields
covered with great beds of iris
and with flowering reeds,
he carries his canoe
and places it in the river.
He floats
past opening flowers,
under young maple leaves,
sitting very silently
and very still,
not even lifting an oar.
Swans nesting
on islands of tufted grass
do not even waken
as the canoe slides past them
on the brown current.
The sun sinks into the west.
The canoe with the silent man
keeps drifting
slowly and steadily
toward the sea.
It is so hard to lose a dear friend. At least the part of her that touched your life lives on in your memories...and her very fine poetry. Thank-you for sharing that with us.
