KATIE
Katie was a little puppy. She wasn’t big like her brothers, but not really very little. Her mama was a pretty brown and white Saint Bernard and her papa was a handsome brown rottweiler. This made Katie a “Saint Weiler.” Katie liked to curl up and snuggle next to her mama, watching her two brothers run, jump and roll over each other in the green grass. Katie’s soft golden fur shone in the sunshine. Her mouth and eyes were framed by a thin line of black fur. Her ears were black too and she had a soft furry white chest and neck. She had one white toe and one white toe nail. That made her special.
“You are a pretty girl,” Mrs. Kane, her owner told her. “You will get a good home,” she said with a smile stroking Katie’s velvety ears.
Five of Katie’s brothers and sisters had already gone to new homes, but Katie didn’t want a new home. She wanted to stay right where she was with her mama, two brothers and Mrs. Kane. She was very happy with her little family. The boys and girls had looked so happy to be taking a new wiggly puppy home with them. The puppies had looked excited too. It made Katie sad every time and she didn’t quite understand it all. It was a puzzle to her. How could they be so brave? Katie hid behind her big furry mama every time people came and her eyes filled up with tears. She hoped nobody would see her there. It had worked so far!
Most of the puppies had left for new homes in the first few months. Now the last three puppies were five months old. They were all growing big and ate lots of food for their dinners. Not so many people came by anymore to see them. That was okay with Katie. She liked romping around and playing tag with her two brothers. Sometimes they chased a ball or they raced each other around the backyard. Sometimes they chased the fat old squirrel up the walnut tree! Every night they would snuggle up together next to their mama and they would be nice and warm and cozy.
One day Katie heard the sound of a car driving into the yard. Mrs. Kane talked for a while with the people who got out of the car. There was a man, a lady and a nice looking little boy with curly brown hair. They all strolled over to see the puppies. The little boy reached his fingers in the pen’s fence and pet Katie’s brother’s wet noses. Then Mrs. Kane opened the gate and Katie’s brothers pushed out wagging all over. Their mama ran out too leaving poor Katie all alone. She gingerly stepped out through the gate and caught up with the others. Maybe if she moved very slowly no one would see her. Maybe she would be invisible behind the others. And then it happened!
The little boy caught sight of Katie, dashed up to her and started rubbing her head
and stroking her back. Katie shivered all over, but not because she was frightened. Ohhh, it felt so good and her tail started wagging back and forth just like her brothers. One of her brothers tried to push himself in front of her, but the little boy kept scratching Katie’s ears. Katie closed her eyes, loving the attention. She forgot to be afraid.
“Katie sweetie, you are going with this new family.” Mrs. Kane stooped down next to her and was talking gently and looking into her eyes, taking hold of one of Katie‘s paws. She gave Katie a tight hug and a kiss on the nose and put a collar around her neck with a leash and handed it to the man who was smiling.
Katie tried to pull away a little glancing back at her mama and brothers. “It’s all right girl,” said the man patting her. The little boy scrambled into the car. “I’m ready!” he announced. His father led Katie over to the car and she hopped up onto the seat next to the boy, then he closed the door. The little boy laughed as Katie licked his face. She liked this little boy very much and she liked having her ears rubbed too. That night as she laid on her new soft bed with the blue fuzzy blanket next to the little boy who had fallen asleep on his own bed, she thought about her mama and brothers. She missed them, but she liked this new home. The man and lady were very kind and the little boy had thrown her new ball all afternoon while she ran and fetched. She had taken her new yellow ball to bed with her too!
Katie was happy. She liked her new bed, her own little boy and her tasty dinner she had eaten that night too. This new home may turn out all right after all. What Katie liked best was knowing that she was a big puppy now.
The End
