The end of summer.

The end of the summer has been a busy one for me and my family. I have thought several times that I ought to sit down and write out a blog, but something always happens to distract me. So... here I am taking advantage of a quiet moment with not too much happening.

We took a week vacation to Maine to see our son N and his wife and our grandson E. We don't get to see them nearly enough. Our grandson will turn 8 years old next week. He is a very bright and out going young man. He also has very long hair for a boy his age. He is wonderful and free. His parents also are wonderful and free in spirit. He goes to an alternative school that is nature based. E is starting 3rd grade this year. I am really anxious to talk to him tonight to hear all about it. Also, tomorrow is his birthday!

We had a great time there. It was good to get away from the daily routine too. We needed the break. It was myself, my hubby and our 4 year old granddaughter who went. Our grandson is an only child so he quickly had a hard time with his girl cousin who is usually very active. He didn't want her to play with his Legos, his hot wheel cars and only his plastic train track (and trains) not the wooden ones. She in turn would get mad and take one Lego from the set he was building and run away. --Ah yes, so it went. We had to keep diverting her and him to do something different where they could share time and space.

Here are some of the places we went--

The Children's Musuem

The General Store next to them. It's lovingly called The General!

The Portland Light

It is just so peaceful and relaxing there. The scenery driving here and there is pretty much the same as home as far as tree lined roads and lakes. The waterways were great though, especially the ocean! Love it, love it, love it!

Right before we left for vacation I helped with a "sprinkle" for our daughter in law Jenn who is due to have a baby girl late Sept. They call it a sprinkle when the mom doesn't need everything because she already has one child.

It was fun. I was in charge of games. We played pin the poop on the diaper (!!), Who knows mom and dad the best ( some questions about the mom and dad including a lot of background family questions.) and another one about  celebrity baby names!
It was fun and the refreshments very very good.

Her sister is a baker and made a lovely cake. Tasty too!

So the next biggie is that our 4 year old granddaughter, A, has started preschool. I was hoping to get her into a Montessori school, but the waiting list is very long. The public school near us offered to pick her up in a little bus and bring her home again. Their program seems nice so we went with that. I do have a lot of reservations about public school, but we shall play it by ear. She loves it. No tears at all except from our daughter after A left on the bus the first day! But I remember those tears that I shed myself when my first 3 kids left for school for the first time. (I home schooled the next 2.)

Other than those things,  the next thing I am dealing with is my cell phone. I don't seem to have much good luck with that phone, although I really don't believe in luck. -- I have misplaced it a few times and now I dropped it face down on the road by my son's house. The screen not only cracked, it shattered! The man at the Verizon store gave me the website to go to to have my screen fixed. I have been paying for insurance every month. It seems that since I cannot turn my phone on (or off) or make calls or take pictures, they want to charge me $199 to fix it. Even if it was a simple cracked screen, they would charge $29 deductible. So I finally said NO! I really only wanted pay as you go phones in the first place but the fast talking salesman hooked me into regular expensive cell phone. -- I suspended service for my phone and went out and bought an A T & T phone at Walmart. A pay as you go one. So I am about to set that up now. --

Tomorrow's project will be to make some peach jam. I also want my son to paint the wooden railing by my steps outside. Sometime soon we will go out in the canoe on the lake too. That's about it. -- Take care and enjoy your labor day!

  1. Well that was sure a fun post! I love the term 'sprinkle' for that context! I laughed at the cousins' antics. Sounds like brother and sister. Your photos are so pretty. I've not been to the water this year so no lighthouse for me. I'd like to get up to the North Shore of Lake Superior, just a couple miles north of us. You asked about the big round hay bales. There's no reason for the mice to hang out in a haybale when they can live in your barn or house. LOL

    1. We moved to NE PA two years ago and our fat tabby has become a fantastic hunter! She mostly keeps us free of mice! The dog just barks at them!
