Electricity

Electricity. I have been thinking about this lately. We are not big consumers of fossil fuel except for fuel for the vehicles. The price of gas has gone up to $4.49 per gallon by us! Guess we had better just stay home!! I will try and do that as much as possible today, although I do have a few errands to attend to. The old days of the horse and buggy seem quite attractive to me sometimes. - I like horses.

Just couldn't resist this!!

So anyway, as I sit and listen to my pellet stove which is hopefully churning out the pellets, (it has begun not to work right lately) I think about our consumption of electricity. What do we use electricity for? We use it for the pellet stove. With out electricity it just wouldn't work. It needs it to turn the churn thing inside that sends out the pellets and to fan the flame after you light it with the propane torch!

We of course use electricity to light our house, and ductless electric heating units. We have two adult children here, my husband and I, our 7 year old granddaughter, two dogs and a cat. So lights are used as well as chargers for phones and laptops. I use the Alexa in my granddaughter's room at night for music, the pump in our aquarium and the light and heater and filter for that too, We have outside lights that we turn on at night when we need them. -

We have our refrigerator - it's new so it's efficient and doesn't waste electricity, but the old one down in the basement is ancient so probably not so efficient. We have an electric can opener and various appliances like a Ninja foodie and crock pot. Oh and then there's the washer and dryer. In good weather I hang out as much laundry as possible. The dryer, I hear is a gobbler of electricity!

Oh and looking in my kitchen I forgot some much used appliances- the coffee maker, my husband's cappuccino maker, the micro wave and of course the stove/oven. Our oven uses propane, but needs electricity too.

When I start to list all the electric we use I am amazed. We stayed in Haiti with missionaries for a short while a few years back, and that village had no electricity!  Wow ! Modern men and women are spoiled! Maybe I need to conserve  too!  That's not a maybe!

We are getting solar panels put on our roof this summer. We have to take down 4 trees to do it. But it won't make a lot of difference as far as the trees go. We have many trees. The solar guy had to evaluate the tree coverage to see if we were able to get solar. We will cut our cost of electricity way back to way more than half. I don't like taking any trees down, but generating our own electricity makes sense. We still can cut back on our usage.

I forgot the TV!  Ei yi yi!

  2. Yes, we are very dependent on electricity. I worry about that too. Solar panels are a good idea IMO. We just put in a house generator that runs on gas in case the power goes down. (Of course we are dependent on gas also) Here in Texas we get power outages alot... in winter and summer. I can handle winter, but not if it gets over 100 F in the house in summer. This can be dangerous for everyone, but especially old folks.
